Where It All Began:
Learning the Trade From the Ground Up

Charles Niesen’s construction journey didn’t start with a college degree or a business plan. It started at age 8, carrying bags of concrete and tools alongside his father and uncles—contractors, tile setters, framers, and gas utility inspectors who understood that quality work and integrity weren’t optional. Those early years on job sites weren’t just about learning skills. They were about absorbing the values and work ethic that would define everything Charles would later build.

Growing up in a family where construction was the family business meant Charles learned by doing. He wasn’t sitting in a classroom learning theory—he was on actual job sites, watching how problems were solved in real time, understanding why certain materials were chosen, seeing the difference between work done right and work done fast. That hands-on apprenticeship, starting from childhood, created a foundation that can’t be taught in any formal program. By the time most people are picking up their first hammer, Charles had already spent years mastering the fundamentals.

Expanding Expertise: Mastering Large-Scale Operations

Oil Field Experience:
Through his twenties, Charles expanded his capabilities in the oil fields, where he learned to operate heavy equipment across multiple specializations. This wasn’t just about running machines—it was about understanding site work, land preparation, excavation, grading, and the large-scale operations that make any construction project possible. The oil fields taught precision, safety, and the ability to handle equipment that many contractors never touch.

Heavy Equipment Expertise : Charles became proficient in operating blades, skid steers, front-end loaders, and excavators. He even trained for crane operations, though he ultimately chose a different path. This expertise means that when Niesen Construction takes on a project involving site work, land clearing, or excavation, Charles isn’t calling in a separate company and hoping they do it right. He knows exactly how it should be done because he’s done it himself—hundreds of times.

Commercial Excellence:
Building at Scale

JE Dunn Experience: Around age 26, Charles joined JE Dunn Construction as a foreman, where he worked on major commercial projects throughout Austin. Most notably, he contributed to approximately 60% of the concrete work on the new hospitals in downtown Austin—projects demanding precise scheduling, quality control, and coordination between multiple trades. This commercial experience taught Charles large-scale project management, systematic processes, and the importance of communication and coordination when dozens of specialists work toward a single goal.

Skills and Project Scope: The commercial years expanded Charles’s expertise beyond residential construction into the complexities of large building systems. Later, through comprehensive maintenance contracts with companies like Hooters and Integral Care, Charles and his team handled every type of issue that could arise in commercial buildings—mechanical, plumbing, electrical, foundation work, and structural repairs. This breadth of experience means there’s virtually no construction problem Charles hasn’t encountered and solved. But those commercial years also taught him something else: he was building someone else’s dream, making money for someone else’s company. It was time to build something of his own.

“I was a foreman for JE Dunn and then I didn’t like working for other people. I’m making somebody else money when I could just be making my own money.”

The Entrepreneurial Journey:
Building His Own Legacy

At 26, Charles made a decision that would define the next chapter of his life: if he was going to build something exceptional, it would be his own company. Starting with a simple handyman business called Texas Handyman 512, Charles began the journey from solo operator to leading a team of 22 skilled specialists.

Texas Handyman 512

The beginning was humble but strategic. Charles started taking on handyman work, maintenance contracts, and any project that came his way. Every job was a chance to prove himself. Every satisfied customer was a building block toward something bigger. The handyman years taught Charles the business side of construction—customer service, pricing, scheduling, and most importantly, that reputation is everything in this industry.

Growth Phase

Evolution Into Renovations

As the business grew and Charles assembled a team of skilled craftsmen, the scope of projects expanded. Small repairs became full bathroom remodels. Kitchen updates became complete renovations. Eventually, Charles realized he had the team, the expertise, and the systems to take on full gut renovations—transforming entire homes from the studs out. Each larger project proved the team could handle increased complexity while maintaining quality.

Niessen Construction LLC

Three years ago, the business officially became Niessen Construction LLC, reflecting its evolution into a full-service custom home builder and general contractor. This wasn’t just a name change—it was the realization of everything Charles had been building toward. With 22 skilled team members, systematic processes, and three decades of combined experience, Niessen Construction could now handle any project from site work and foundation to the final coat of paint. The company Charles envisioned—one that treats every customer like family and never compromises on quality—had become reality.

“I’ve been doing this work since I was a kid. We’ve been building this thing together for about 15 years. Now we’re about to grow, and as we grow, we’ll all grow together.”

More Than Construction:
Building on Faith and Values

After 33 years in construction, Charles has learned that the best projects aren’t just built with skilled hands—they’re built on solid principles. Niesen Construction operates on values that guide every decision, every interaction, and every project from start to finish.

Faith-Based Foundation

Niesen Construction is a faith-based company, which means operating with integrity, honesty, and values-driven principles in all business dealings. It means treating people the way we’d want to be treated. It means doing the right thing even when no one’s watching. This foundation guides how we interact with customers, subcontractors, suppliers, and our community.

Customer-First Mentality

Every decision starts with one question: What’s best for the customer? Not what’s fastest, not what’s most profitable, but what’s right. This mentality means finding ways to work within your budget, communicating honestly about timelines and challenges, and never cutting corners that would compromise your home’s quality or your peace of mind.

Quality Over Profit

Niesen Construction isn’t about maximizing profit on each project—it’s about building a reputation that lasts. Charles would rather make less money and deliver exceptional quality than rush through a project for quick profit. This commitment to quality means using proper materials, taking the time to do things right, and never ‘slapping things together’ just to move on to the next job.

Transparent Communication

Customers consistently praise Niesen Construction’s communication. Charles and his team keep you informed every step of the way—what’s happening today, what’s happening tomorrow, any challenges that arise, and how they’ll be resolved. No surprises, no hidden charges, no excuses. Just honest, straightforward updates that let you stay in control of your project.

“We’re not all about making money off of your project. We’re trying to keep our name up and know that when you call us, you’re getting good quality service. We’re not just going to come in there and slap stuff together and be done with it.”

- Charles Niesen, Founder & Owner

The Team Behind the Work

Niesen Construction’s 22-person team isn’t a collection of random subcontractors. Many of these skilled specialists have been working together for 15 years, building systems, trust, and expertise as a unified team. Each member brings specialized skills—framers, concrete specialists, electricians, plumbers, finish carpenters, and more—allowing Niesen Construction to handle every aspect of construction in-house with accountability and quality control. Looking Forward

As Niesen Construction continues to grow, the mission remains unchanged: deliver exceptional quality, treat every customer like family, and build relationships that last beyond project completion. Charles’s vision for the coming years includes expanding the team with dedicated project managers to provide even more attentive service, acquiring additional equipment to handle multiple simultaneous projects, and establishing a permanent storefront office. The goal isn’t just growth for growth’s sake—it’s about serving more Central Texas families while maintaining the personal touch and quality that define Niesen Construction.

Now we're just at a standstill because now we need to grow. I'm 41, I'm still young, but I can't do it all. As we grow, we'll all grow together.
